1. Overview

Vision Education (the "Service", "we", "us") is a non-profit educational platform developed by Yaw Ndaase Mensuoh for the benefit of Ghanaian Senior High School students. We are committed to protecting your privacy and ensuring your student data is handled securely and transparently.

2. Data & Usage

We employ a "privacy-by-design" approach. Most of your practice data (scores, answers, and progress) is stored locally in your browser's Local Storage and is never transmitted to our servers unless explicitly synced for cross-device access.

3. Google Sign-In and User Data

When you choose to sign in using Google Sign-In, Vision Education accesses and uses specific Google user data to provide our educational services. This section explains exactly what data we access, how we use it, and how we protect it.

3.1 Google User Data We Access

When you authenticate with Google Sign-In, we request and receive the following information from your Google Account:

  • Email Address — Your primary Google email address (e.g., student@gmail.com)
  • Profile Name — Your full name as registered with your Google Account
  • Profile Picture — Your Google Account profile photo (if available)
  • Google User ID — A unique identifier assigned by Google to your account

OAuth Scopes Used: We use the openid, email, and profile scopes, which are the basic authentication scopes that do not access any sensitive or restricted data.

3.2 How We Use Google User Data

We use the Google user data we receive for the following specific purposes:

  • Account Creation and Authentication: Your email address serves as your unique account identifier. We use it to create and maintain your Vision Education account and to authenticate you when you sign in.
  • Personalization: Your profile name and picture are displayed on your student dashboard, progress reports, and certificates to personalize your learning experience.
  • Progress Synchronization: Your email address is used as a key to sync your learning progress, quiz scores, and study materials across multiple devices (e.g., phone, tablet, computer).
  • Communication: We may use your email address to send you important account notifications, such as password resets, security alerts, or critical service updates. We do not send marketing emails without your explicit consent.
  • Session Management: Your Google User ID helps us maintain secure login sessions and prevent unauthorized access to your account.

3.3 How We Store Google User Data

Google user data is stored securely in the following locations:

  • Firebase Authentication: Your email, name, and Google User ID are stored in Firebase Authentication (Google Cloud Platform) with industry-standard encryption.
  • Cloud Firestore: Your profile information is stored in our Cloud Firestore database, which is hosted on Google Cloud Platform servers located in the United States. All data is encrypted in transit (TLS/SSL) and at rest (AES-256).
  • Local Browser Storage: Your profile picture URL and basic profile information may be cached in your browser's local storage for faster page loading. This data remains on your device and is not transmitted to third parties.

Data Retention: We retain your Google user data for as long as your account remains active. If you delete your account, all associated Google user data is permanently deleted within 30 days.

3.4 How We Share Google User Data

We do not sell, rent, or trade your Google user data to third parties. We only share your data in the following limited circumstances:

  • Service Providers: We use Google Cloud Platform (Firebase) to host our authentication and database services. Google acts as a data processor and is bound by strict data protection agreements.
  • Legal Requirements: We may disclose your data if required by law, court order, or government regulation, or to protect the rights, property, or safety of Vision Education, our users, or the public.
  • With Your Consent: We will never share your data with third parties for marketing or advertising purposes without your explicit, informed consent.

3.5 Data Security Measures

We implement the following security measures to protect your Google user data:

  • Encryption: All data transmitted between your browser and our servers is encrypted using TLS 1.3 (HTTPS). Data stored in our databases is encrypted at rest using AES-256 encryption.
  • Access Controls: Only authorized personnel with a legitimate need can access user data. All access is logged and monitored.
  • Firebase Security Rules: Our Firestore database uses strict security rules that ensure users can only access their own data.
  • Regular Security Audits: We conduct regular security reviews and updates to protect against emerging threats.

3.6 Your Rights and Controls

You have the following rights regarding your Google user data:

  • Access: You can view all the Google user data we have stored by visiting your account settings page.
  • Correction: You can update your profile name and other information at any time through your account settings.
  • Deletion: You can request deletion of your account and all associated Google user data by contacting us at support@visionedu.site. We will delete all data within 30 days.
  • Revoke Access: You can revoke Vision Education's access to your Google Account at any time by visiting your Google Account Permissions page.
  • Data Portability: You can request a copy of your data in a machine-readable format by contacting us.

4. Google API Services User Data Policy Compliance

Vision Education's use and transfer of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.

4.1 Limited Use Disclosure

Vision Education's use of information received from Google APIs will adhere to the following requirements:

  • We only use Google user data to provide and improve our educational services as described in this privacy policy.
  • We do not use Google user data for serving advertisements.
  • We do not allow humans to read Google user data unless:
    • We have your explicit consent for specific messages or data;
    • It is necessary for security purposes (e.g., investigating abuse);
    • It is required to comply with applicable law; or
    • Our use is limited to internal operations and the data is aggregated and anonymized.
  • We do not transfer Google user data to third parties except:
    • As necessary to provide or improve our services (e.g., using Google Cloud Platform for hosting);
    • To comply with applicable law; or
    • As part of a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets (with user notification).

4.2 No Advertising or Data Brokerage

We explicitly state: Vision Education does not use your Google user data for advertising purposes, nor do we sell, rent, or trade your information to third-party data brokers, advertisers, or marketing companies. Your data is used solely to provide you with educational services.

5. Account Deletion and Data Removal

You have the right to delete your account and all associated data at any time. Here's how we handle account deletion:

  • How to Request Deletion: Contact us at support@visionedu.site with the subject line "Account Deletion Request" and include your registered email address.
  • What Gets Deleted: All Google user data (email, name, profile picture, Google User ID), learning progress, quiz scores, certificates, and any other personal information associated with your account.
  • Deletion Timeline: We will permanently delete all your data within 30 days of receiving your request.
  • Confirmation: You will receive an email confirmation once your data has been deleted.
  • Backup Retention: Deleted data may remain in our backup systems for up to 90 days for disaster recovery purposes, after which it is permanently purged.

6. Children's Privacy

Vision Education is designed for Senior High School students in Ghana, many of whom may be under 18 years of age. We take children's privacy seriously:

  • We do not knowingly collect more data than necessary to provide our educational services.
  • We do not use children's data for advertising or marketing purposes.
  • Parents and guardians can request access to or deletion of their child's data by contacting us.
  • We comply with applicable children's privacy laws, including COPPA (Children's Online Privacy Protection Act) where applicable.

7. Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices or legal requirements. When we make significant changes:

  • We will update the "Last Updated" date at the top of this page.
  • We will notify you via email if you have an account with us.
  • We will display a prominent notice on our website for 30 days.

Your continued use of Vision Education after changes to this Privacy Policy constitutes your acceptance of the updated policy.
